Projects | Photon manufactures components for new ÖBB night trains
Over the next years, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) plans to extend its network of night trains across Europe. As an important supplier for the production of the new night trains, Photon is part of this exciting project.
More night trains – less emissions
Once the Corona pandemic has subsided, ÖBB’s Nightjet trains will again take European travellers to their destinations. More night-train connections are an important step towards reducing emissions, particularly by reducing the number of short-haul flights. The new Nightjet trains also offer more comfort and efficiency – not least due to innovative lightweight elements in the construction.
ÖBB plans to invest € 500 million
Initially, 13 new next-generation Nightjets, each with seven carriages, are to be manufactured for ÖBB at the Siemens plant in Vienna-Simmering by the end of 2022. Further orders could follow. In total, ÖBB plans to invest 500 million euros in night trains over the next years.
Photon contributes in-depth expertise
Photon is part of this promising project. At the Photon site in Berlin-Spandau, the roof transitions, the air-conditioning and roof trays as well as the sidewall panels for the new Nightjets are manufactured. The decisive factor for the cooperation with Siemens was Photon’s many years of expertise in the production of train components and here in particular in the field of laser beam welding.
For example, the sidewalls, roof assemblies and underframe components
of the fourth generation ICE wagons are being manufactured at Photon. Another Photon expertise, deep drawing, has been used successfully for years in rail vehicle construction – for example in the production of train heads.
